Padrón, birthplace of the Jacobean

The Jacobean tradition has its origin in Padrón and there are numerous places in this municipality where the traces of religious beliefs reach our days.

In the chancel of the church of SantiagoLocated on the banks of the River Sar and the Puente del Carmen, the "Pedrón" is preserved, a Roman altar from which the name of the town of Padrón etymologically comes and which would be dedicated to Neptune, god of the seas and all the waters. The inscription "NO ORIS ESES DSP" can be seen in this area, which is interpreted as "To Neptune, the Iriense Forum, with his money."

PilgrimAccording to the Christian tradition of the Jacobean Traslatio, collected in Book III of the Calixtinus Codex, two disciples of the Apostle, Theodore and Athanasius, tied the boat to this Roman soldier, which, guided by an angel, was transporting his corpse from Haffa (Palestine), where he had been martyred. At that time it was considered that the body of the Apostle should rest in the farthest place of preaching and it is thought that this point was Padrón, specifically the mount of San Gregorio, on whose stones the Apostle Santiago he had preached to the Gentiles and where he had caused the miraculous spring to flow under the hermitage with his staff.
